Guerlain 24K Primer Or Just Fancy Hand Sanitizer?

So if you’re familiar with Jeffree Star and follow him on Snapchat or Youtube you’ll know about his love for the Guerlain L’Or Gold Face Primer.

If you have never herd of Jeffree or the product itself, let me just introduce you to the product description, and you try and tell me that you’re not the slightest bit tempted.

“GUERLAIN L’Or Radiance Concentrate with Pure Gold is an embellishing make-up base sprinkled with pure 24-carat gold flakes. Like the most luxurious jewellery ddb1b645b4240df80cb51c43e740e022pieces, the precious flakes were crafted into ultra-sparkling and ultra-reflective particles, then dispersed in a hydrating smoothing gel. The complexion is beautified. It glows with divine and unfailing radiance. Skin is smooth, supple and satiny, ready for perfect, enhanced and long-lasting make-up.

L’Or has a distinctive and delicate floral scent. The first peach note blended with an accord of vegetal notes is fresh and sparkling. The rose, raspberry and jasmine heart is enriched with a powdery base of balsamic, benzoin and white musk. “

Being the kind of girl I am and jumping on the bandwagon whenever Jeffree falls in love when-you-trying-to-save-money-and-you-hear-that-3849616with a product, I of course had to try it out. The exact words I said to myself were “treat yo’self”(sorry if the meme triggers you). So I hopped on to Feel Unique and minus £46 later and and a next day delivery I had received my product.

I wont lie to you, I felt very bourgeoisie. The bottle just looked so perfect and luxurious I felt like it was worth my £46 and 8 hour shift to earn the money. From that heavy metal cap down to that brand engraving I was in love. For me it’s my most prized make up possession, fashion statement and collectable. The product itself does work, it brightens up my foundation and holds on to it for the rest of the day.

I’ll now admit I’m a slave to the make up industry, and in my lifetime I will most likely splash £10K or more of my hard earned cash at it. I’m either infatuated by the brand of Guerlain or just love the smell of a “fancy hand sanitizer” – the exact words of a friend that had a little whiffimg_7102.

In regards to my infatuation, I have recently studied a module on advertising and semiotics, and as a result I’m questioning everything I purchase. One theory that stands out to me is Baudrillard’s idea that, “we consume what objects stand for – rather than the objects themselves and their product function.”(Baudrillard 1968:62) I don’t know if this stands for the L’Or Primer and my emotional attachments with it, because It also makes me question whether this emotional attachment is healthy. But, I also don’t  want to find out that this is true and that I essentially wasted my money on a product because of what it stands for and the associations with my favorite YouTuber. It’s just something to consider before deciding to purchase the product or any other high market goods again.

In summary, I absolutely love it. It works and makes me feel pampered. So if you’re ever walking past a Geurlain counter, try the tester and you’ll most likely fall in love the same  way I have!
